Message from the Director

Dear Families,As we enter the spring season and final third of the school year, we are reminded of this season’s promise of renewal and growth, and the key role schools and families have together in supporting student learning and well-being. This time of <a href="about:blank" class="editor-link">year</a> brings many opportunities for learning both inside and outside of the classroom, along with the return of outdoor extracurricular activities. While this week has been very wet and rainy, the warmer temperatures of spring are upon us.  I would like to take this opportunity to share a few important updates with you:P.A. Day – Friday, April 17A reminder to families that tomorrow, Friday, April 17, is a P.A. Day. There will be no classes for students, and we look forward to welcoming them back to school on Monday.Family Engagement and Climate Survey – Coming in MayIn early May, Limestone will be inviting families to take part in a Family Engagement and Climate Survey. The optional survey is anonymous, and families can choose which questions they want to answer.The survey asks about topics such as feeling connected to school, family involvement, safety and bullying, communication, before- and after-school programming, and how technology like artificial intelligence is used in schools.The feedback shared through this survey helps schools and the school board understand what is working well, what could improve, and what may make it harder for some families to take part. Your feedback helps strengthen communication, support student well-being, and improve school experiences for everyone.More information will be shared leading up to the survey being live in early May. <a href="https://youtu.be/kKxSsDtggew" class="editor-link">Families are encouraged to watch a short video</a> featuring Senior Staff and a Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) Co-Chair, who share more about the Family Engagement and Climate Survey and why family voice is so important.Human Rights InformationLaunched in October 2022, the Limestone’s Student Human Rights Reporting Tool provides a way for students, families, caregivers, and staff to report human rights concerns involving LDSB students, including matters related to discrimination and harassment. Reviewing and analyzing this information helps support safe, welcoming, and inclusive school environments and supports the board’s obligations under the Ontario Human Rights Code. The <a href="https://www.limestone.on.ca/documents/dff6803b-6f2d-4d36-a758-68758a63ceb3/2026-04-09-Student-Human-Rights-Data-Summary-for-2024-2025.pdf?fingerprint=ppb20260409164623" class="editor-link">Student Human Rights Reports – 2024-2025 Summary is now available online</a> and can be accessed by families. Student Census 2025 UpdateIn November 2025, Limestone completed the See Yourself in Limestone: Student Census 2025, a voluntary and confidential survey that helps us better understand students’ identities and school experiences. The findings support planning and decision-making that promotes equity, well being, and student success across Limestone schools. An overview of the Student Census 2025 was presented to the Board of Trustees at last night’s board meeting. Families are encouraged to <a href="https://www.limestone.on.ca/news/see-yourself-in-limestone-2025-student-census-update-20260416133605" class="editor-link">visit the Limestone District School Board website to review the full Student Census summary</a> and learn more about how student voice is helping shape our work. Mental Health Supports Available for StudentsIn response to tragic events, locally or globally, students may experience a wide range of emotions, including sadness, confusion, worry, or questions about what they may be hearing from others. Students may react in different ways depending on their age, experiences, and how connected they feel to the situation. With time, reassurance, and support from caring adults, these reactions often ease.We encourage families to keep lines of communication open at home, to invite questions, and to offer reassurance as needed. I don't know about you; but I am ready for some consistent sunshine!With spring, activities are ramping up at the school. Aside form the numerous field trips, there are clubs going on as well as special workshops opportunities, basketball, running and soon track and field. We sure know how to keep our little rhinos busy!Friday is a PA Day. Look at the poster below for a great opportunity. I know grade 6 parents are probably wondering when the Celebration will be this year. We are currently finalizing the details before confirming the date. We should be able to share it shortly. Every year, students in grade 3 and grade 6 write the EQAO assessment. Every little bit helps!Fun fact: The kids who came to help last year had a great time, bring your kids so they can be a part of this event that supports our community and the environment. May 9: Take downSwing by the school at 2pm to pick up a few boxes of leftover items to donation locations Our Parent Council is recruiting volunteers for Bingo!<ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr">Rideau Public School is now a registered charity for bingo fundraising at Community Spirit Gaming Centre at 900 Montreal Street. </li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr">Volunteer shifts are two hours long and are various times including during the day, evening, and weekends. </li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr">Duties are very light: mostly greeting people, walking around the bingo hall, and getting a runner's attention if someone gets a bingo.</li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr">Shifts are very lucrative: each two-hour shift earns about $600 for our library renovations, kindergarten yard shade, and many other initiatives for students. </li><li value="5" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr">There are currently only two shifts a month so the time commitment is low. Sewing Maching Loan ProgramWith the success of the Sewing Club, Rideau is thrilled to offer a Sewing Machine Loan Program! If your student loved sewing in the club but doesn’t have access to a machine (or if you're not a sewing expert yourself), this program is here to help.Families can borrow a sewing machine, supply kit, and pattern binder for a week at a time to continue building sewing skills. Loans run Wednesday to Wednesday, with a mandatory tutorial led by M. Himada after school at 4:00 PM on pick-up day.This program is open to students who have participated in Sewing Club. For more information or to book a week, contact Patti (patti.n.lane@gmail.com) or M. Himada (himadaa@limestone.on.ca).Let’s keep the creativity going!Beaver BotsThis past fall, Rideau received a $1,000 grant from Caldwell & Co. Kingston Real Estate Agents to support the purchase of Beaverbots (cardboard cutters). Additional funds were raised through a raffle featuring items donated by the Limestone Quilters Guild, the sale of DIY Rad Rhino buttons at two Boo Bash events, and a generous $300 contribution from the School Advisory Council. Thanks to this amazing community support, we were able to purchase four Beaverbots for the school!Students have since used the Beaverbots to create planes, famous buildings, 3D ornaments, and bridges. Merci mille fois! Field TripsWe have lots of field trips and events coming up so please keep your eyes on School Day so that you don't miss anything. Many families have offered to cover the cost of other students attending field trips as some families appreciate this support for theor children to go on field trips. We used to have paper field trip forms on which you could check a box to help support another child, but with digital permission forms this is not an option. We now have Products on School Day for supporting other students on field trips if this is something that you would like to do. <h2 class="editor-heading-h2" style="text-align: start;">ENRICHMENT WORKSHOP SERIES at RIDEAU: </h2>A Series of Workshops for Students by Visiting Experts Workshop #2: Poetry with Sadiqa de MeijerWednesday, April 8 at 10:45-11:45 and Thursday, April 9 at 10:45-11:30 in the library Students in grades 4-6 are invited to join Sadiqa de Meijer, Kingston's Poet Laureate, for a 2-part workshop on poetry that asks the question, What would Lake Ontario sound like in a poem?This poetry workshop will explore, through reading a poem, improvising on it with some humour, and then creating our own works, a deeper engagement with where we live. The workshop will be documented by members of The Rideau Tribune, our school’s student newspaper, and some of the resulting poems may be published in the upcoming issue. Please encourage your child to attend! Many families have offered to cover the cost of other students attending field trips as some families appreciate this support for theor children to go on field trips. We used to have paper field trip forms on which you could check a box to help support another child, but with digital permission forms this is not an option. There will be retakes so if your child misses it there will be an opportunity for a photo in the future - date TBD.With the milder weather last week, our lost and found is quite full - students are taking off coats, hats, mitts outside and leaving them there. Please check in at the school (if you are able) to see if anything belongs to your child. Additionally, please encourage them to have a look through the items to see if anything belongs to them. Anything labeled is returned to its owner, but there are a few items that are labeled but the writing has faded. These items are still there and will remain there until we donate them to the Pop-cycle Sale in May. Limestone District School Board Welcomes 2026–2027 Student Trustees

The Limestone District School Board (LDSB) is pleased to announce the appointment of its 2026–2027 Student Trustees, who will be formally welcomed at the April meeting of the Board.Student trustees play an important role in bringing student perspectives to board-level discussions, helping ensure that student voice is reflected in decision-making across the district. For the upcoming term, LDSB looks forward to working with three engaged and passionate student leaders who represent rural, urban, and Indigenous student communities:<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Audrey Bateman – Rural Student Trustee</h2>A message from Student Trustee Bateman: I'm so excited to be your rural student trustee this year. Limestone DSB Schools to Participate in Kingston Community Climate Action Fund FoodCycler Project

Limestone District School Board schools will participate in this year’s Kingston Community Climate Action Fund (KCCAF) initiative, supported by the City of Kingston and led by Sustainable Kingston. The project aims to turn everyday school lunch waste into meaningful climate action by introducing FoodCyclers in five to seven local elementary schools, with the long-term goal of securing a unit for each elementary school across the City of Kingston. These units will complement existing food-based programming and serve as an additional hands-on learning tool for students.The initiative will help divert organic waste from student snacks and lunches away from landfill. Puzzles: One of our educators reached out to ask if our parent community happens to have any puzzles they might be willing to donate.The educator is looking for 30, 60, or 100 piece puzzles. You can drop them off to the office or send them with your child to school. You can add a note saying “attn: Mme. Kim”.Garden Club: Also, don’t forget about any seeds, hourglass shaped 2L bottles, or soil you might have for our garden club. Our Parent Council is recruiting volunteers for Bingo!<ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem">Rideau Public School is now a registered charity for bingo fundraising at Community Spirit Gaming Centre at 900 Montreal Street. </li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem">Volunteer shifts are two hours long and are various times including during the day, evening, and weekends. </li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem">Duties are very light: mostly greeting people, walking around the bingo hall, and getting a runner's attention if someone gets a bingo.</li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem">Shifts are very lucrative: each two-hour shift earns about $600 for our library renovations, kindergarten yard shade, and many other initiatives for students. </li><li value="5" class="editor-listitem">There are currently only two shifts a month so the time commitment is low.
